Silk Test Installation

Silk Test is an automated testing tool for fast and reliable functional and regression testing. Silk Test helps development teams, quality teams, and business analysts to deliver software faster, and with high quality.

With Silk Test you can record and replay tests across multiple platforms and devices to ensure that your applications work exactly as intended.

The Silk Test product suite includes the following components:

  1. Silk Test Workbench – Silk Test Workbench is the quality testing environment that offers .NET scripting for power users and easy to use visual tests to make testing more accessible to a broader audience.
  2. Silk4NET – The Silk4NET Visual Studio plug-in enables you to create Visual Basic or C# test scripts directly in Visual Studio.
  3. Silk4J – The Silk4J Eclipse plug-in enables you to create Java-based test scripts directly in your Eclipse environment.
  4. Silk Test Classic – Silk Test Classic is the Silk Test client that enables you to create scripts based on 4Test.
  5. Silk Test Agents – The Silk Test agent is the software process that translates the commands in your tests into GUI-specific commands. In other words, the agent drives and monitors the application you are testing. One agent can run locally on the host machine. In a networked environment, any number of agents can run on remote machines.

System Requirements and Prerequisites

The following section identifies the system requirements for installing and running Silk Test.

Hardware Requirements

Micro Focus recommends the following hardware:

  1. Processor Intel or AMD dual-core processor running at 2 GHz.
  2. RAM 1 GB free memory.
  3. Hard disk space 2 GB of free disk space.

Note: The recommended hardware reflects the minimum requirements for Silk Test. Depending on the requirements of the application under test or the requirements of your test environment, you might require additional hardware.

When testing on an iOS device, Micro Focus recommends using a device with 1 GB RAM or more.

To test a web application on Apple Safari or a mobile application on iOS, a Mac with the following hardware is required:

System Area Requirement

  1. Operating system OS X El Capitan 10.11.3 or later.
  2. Hard disk space 1 GB of free disk space.

Note: Visual Studio 12 or later should be installed before installing Silk test.

If your system satisfies these requirements, then the next step is to download and install Silk Test. To download the latest version of Silk Test (45 days Evaluation version), register on Microfocus website –

After registering, and email verification, login with your credentials and download the latest Silk test. Once you have successfully downloaded the file, you can proceed with installation process.

Silk Test – Installation Steps (Windows)

  1. If you have downloaded the file (“silktest-185.exe”), open the location where you have downloaded the file and run it. You will see the InstallAnywhere progress bar.

  1. Click “Next” to continue.

  1. Again click “Next” to proceed.

  1. Accept the terms of License Agreement by clicking on the check box and then click on “Next”.

  1. Features to be installed are pre selected. Click “Next” to continue.

  1. On this screen, specify the root folder where you want to install all the Silk products. Default location is pre-filled. Click “Next” to continue.

  1. On this screen, you can add Windows firewall exceptions. Click “Next” to proceed.

  1. Select the relevant option and click “Next”.

  1. Select the relevant option and click “Next”.

  1. If you want to create and execute tests on a Mac, you can download the macOS setup for Silk test from this screen. Since we are installing on windows, we will keep it unchecked. Click “Next” to continue.

  1. Review the installation summary and if everything looks OK, click on “Install”.

  1. Once the installation process begins, you will see the progress bar. Wait till it is 100% done.

  1. Select the appropriate option. We have selected Evaluation version here. Click “Next” to continue.

  1. You will have to restart the system, once installation has successfully completed. Select the appropriate option and click “Done” to finish installation.

  1. Congrats!! You have successfully installed the application and after restart, you can start using Silk test.
